English, Media and Drama Learning Team
Team Overview
The team offers a wide range of subjects to support learners of all abilities and interests. The learning environment is well equipped with a computer suite, media base and a well stocked and staffed library.
Key Stage 3
Students work through a three year programme of study in English, Literature and Drama with a focus on the three key strands of reading, writing and speaking and listening. Students in year 7 are also timetabled to spend a lesson a week in the library, understanding the resources available and enjoying the extensive range of texts.
Key Stage 4
There are further opportunities to opt for G.C.S.E Drama or Media Studies.
Key Stage 5
A level options include English Literature, Media or Drama and Theatre Studies.
The department is host to a wide range of enrichment activities including a debating club, spelling bee, creative writing club and numerous reading groups including a Manga club and the Carnegie Medal and the Leeds Book Awards. Students can also take part in Drama Club, the school show (‘The Wiz’ this year) and the Connexions Play in conjunction with the National Youth Theatre.
Students have recently participated in the NEEC Media competition where they produced a two minute film about their vision of education in the twenty first century. If successful, they will win a green screen for the school. Students at Key Stage 4 and 5 can also take part in the national ‘Film Club’ – screenings of independent and classic films that are unavailable elsewhere. These forward thinking initiatives engage students with a range of interests, enhancing their learning within the classroom.
