Careers and Higher Education

Making the right choices for your chosen career

The choices you make now can affect whether or not you are able to apply for certain courses at university.  If you have a particular course or career in mind, you should carry out some research by looking at different university websites to see which A-Levels or BTECs they require you to have and what grades they ask for in a typical offer. Support for Sixth Form students includes a UCAS convention and careers day. Advice for Parents and Guardians can be found on this UCAS website.  In addition, the 2017 UCAS Guidance for Parents document can be found here.

The table below shows some examples but the exact requirements vary between universities and from year to year, so please check these.

Not all careers require a degree and going to University may not suit all young people. When looking at the next step for your chosen career you can look at careers links on www.leedspathways.org.uk Alternatively you can chose to study and work with an advance apprenticeship. This option can enable you to gain a degree level qualification while working in your chosen career.  The National Apprenticeship Service has more details at www.apprenticeships.org.uk
