Modern Foreign Languages

Modern Foreign Languages Department

Team Overview

In the Modern Foreign Languages team, we are five professionals who take pride in the job we do. We believe strongly in the importance of learning languages and that they hold a fundamental place at the heart of the curriculum. This belief underpins our work as teachers and we are fully committed to raising the standards of teaching in the classroom and examination results.

Our students are able to have contact with a native speaker of the language(s) they study due to the school policy of employing foreign language assistants in French, Spanish and German.  Our FLA's also deliver language clubs at lunchtime.

KS3

All students entering the school study French for 3 hours a week in Year 7 and this continues in Year 8 and Year 9 for 2 hours a week.

In Year 9, students can opt for a further language at NVQ in Spanish or German.

KS4

All students can opt for French, Spanish or German at GCSE. They can also choose French or Spanish at NVQ. Students follow the AQA linear specification, studying their chosen language(s) for 5 hours over 2 weeks, in both Year 10 and 11. Students then have the opportunity to take their language learning further by opting to study their chosen language(s) at Advanced Level.

KS5

Year 12 : AS course in French (AQA), Spanish (AQA), German (AQA) - 4 hours a week.

Year 13 : A2 course in French (AQA), Spanish (AQA), German (AQA) - 4/5 hours a week.
