From 2017, English Language, English Literature and mathematics were examined against new, more challenging specification GCSEs, with 9 to 1 grading.
- A grade 7 is aligned to a legacy grade A.
- A grade 4 is aligned to a legacy grade C.
- A grade 1 is aligned to a legacy grade G.
Other subjects moved to new 9 to 1 specifications in 2018, and the remainder have follow in 2019.
Vocational qualifications (BTECs, VCerts etc.) will remain on Distinction* to Pass grading, although the specifications for these are also being made more rigorous.
All school performance is now measured in the following ways, from results at the end of Year 11:
- The percentage of students achieving a strong pass (grade 5 or above) in English and mathematics
- Students’ average grade in their EBacc subjects (English, mathematics, two sciences, geography or history and a language)
- Students’ average Attainment 8 score (the average grade in 8 subjects including English, mathematics, 3 EBacc subjects and 3 other subjects)
- Students’ average Progress 8 score (the difference between our students’ Attainment 8 and that of students with the same KS2 data nationally)

Attainment 8 is the score students achieve when their GCSE results are combined. This value is compared to their KS2 “starting point”, allowing us to measure their progress with us. In 2018 BSA students performed noticeably better than those nationally, with an average Attainment 8 score of 50.31 compared to the national average of 44.3 this has then continued to increase with an Attainment 8 score of 54.30 in 2019.
Progress 8 is a measure of how much better our students have done at GCSE in comparison to students nationally with the same KS2 scores. This makes it a fairer measure of progress than previous performance measures.
In 2018, BSA achieved a P8 score of +0.22 placing it well above the national average of 0 however in 2019 our P8 score of +0.51 places us in the top 7% of schools nationally and significantly above national average.

It can be seen that lower ability students are achieving results slightly lower than similar students nationally. We recognise that a major area of focus, and part of our partnership work with colleagues across The Gorse Academies Trust will involve supporting the higher rates of progress of our lower ability students in 2019-20 but we are pleased to say this cohort still performed in line with similar students nationally. We are delighted that our focus on middle and higher ability learners has resulted in such a fantastic improvement for these cohorts with higher ability learners achieving almost a fully grade higher than their counterparts nationally.
At The GORSE Academies Trust we are committed to ensuring all our students can access a curriculum that is traditional in its high academic standards, including a good spread of GCSE options, including Modern Foreign Languages, whilst also catering to a vocational element.
The Ebacc (English Baccalaureate) is a measure providing information about specific subject performance that includes the sciences, modern foreign languages and the humanities. At BSA we aim to encourage as many of our students as possible to study a modern foreign language. We believe that this is inherently valuable for them in developing certain skills, but may also provide an entry into varied careers involving working and communicating with people from foreign countries. In an increasingly interconnected world, this is a highly valuable skill-set to obtain. Our 2019 results show our attainment was well above national average.
