Mrs Westerman has written to Year 11 parents this week with advice on supporting students through the exams; she included a copy of the revision timetable. There is also a recipe book from PiXL with ideas on boosting concentration and energy during the exam period. All students also have a copy of the “Power to Perform” booklet which is packed with advice on managing stress, eating and sleeping well and planning an effective revision programme. If you would like further support please contact the Year Office.

We are approaching the end of our consultation on converting to an academy with the  high performing GORSE Academies Trust, a choice afforded to the school by our consecutive ‘Good’ Ofsted judgements. We believe that Boston Spa School securing GORSE as a partner represents something of a coup for our locality and presents a significant strategic shift in secondary provision in our locality too.

It has been a busy week with two evenings of parental meetings, and a consultation with our family of schools. The consultation closes on Tuesday 23rd May 2017 and our website includes my letter to parents, some Frequently Asked Questions and the email address for you to use for your contribution. Thank you for engaging with us on this.

It was a privilege to welcome Dr John Sentamu, the Most Reverend and Right Honourable Lord Archbishop of York into school today. He met with GCSE and A Level students for nearly two hours.

He shared with them his upbringing in Uganda, life under Idi Amin, his rise to becoming a judge, a vicar and then to the archbishopric. With the students he discussed poverty, fair trade, injustice, capital punishment, taxation, wealth, equal marriage rights, abortion, parliamentary reform and faith. They were really excellent and engaging sessions. It is a rare moment for our young people to hear directly from someone with such authority and personal history.

I enjoyed meeting with Mia-Rose Petcher and Dominic Mbye for hot chocolate this week. Both had praise for the support they were receiving from their mothers during the exam season. Mia talked of how she’s being kept well-fed during her nightly two hour revision sessions; Dominic described how his Xbox Controller has been taken away until the exams are over!

There is an important meeting on Wednesday 24th May for Year 13 university applicants and their parents which will look at how students might make best use of the UCAS ‘Adjustment’ and ‘Clearing’ procedures.  I commend it to you all, it begins at 6pm.

Despite the exam season arriving it’s not been all work in the Sixth Form this week, as ‘Sassy United’ beat ‘My Little Kobe’ 7-2 in the final of the 6th form football competition. Well done to Ben Schur, Ethan Mullings-Saidani, Callum Kelliher, Joe Lawson, Frankie Ambler and Ben Vickers. The third/fourth playoff saw ‘Walton B Team’ narrowly edge out ‘Corbyn Monoxide’.

On Tuesday evening the Year 8 and 10 Athletic teams competed in the first round of the Leeds Schools Athletic League at South Leeds Stadium. Well done to all our competitors, with our best performances coming from Phoebe Hughes (3rd in the 100m), Josh Clarkson (2nd in the javelin) and Tom Marsh (3rd in triple jump).
