YEAR 7 ‘SETTLING IN’ EVENING
Year 7 have made a great start, we are very proud of them. Thank you for your support at the ‘settling in’ evening on Thursday. It was good to see so many happy smiling faces as families were able to reflect on the positive start made by them all.
Reward, recognition and celebration is at the core of Positive Discipline, so it was a joy to see nearly 600 enjoy the big reward of a trip to Lightwater Valley today.
Weekly reward, recognition and celebration takes place during PD Hour. This week I was pleased to congratulate Grace Sykes, Lily Barton, Finn Brooks, Holly Hemingway, Thea Beesley, Sherise Findley-James, Madison Bolton, Amelia Bell, Katie Locker, Maisie Trutch, Jake Ward, Bryn Sykes, Megan Hatherley, Holly Waite, Frazer Rollings, Misha Kitchen, Jessica Robinson, Thomas Ames, Charlotte Hemsley, Ayisha Mirza, Ellie Garbutt, Kaydee Watson, Ava Watson, McKenzie Bilicki and Jamie Soule.
ELLIOTT HUDSON COLLEGE AT BOSTON SPA ACADEMY
We are well advanced with the plans to open Elliott Hudson College at Boston Spa in 2019, and this week we held a large meeting with a variety of professionals to look at the opportunity for reshaping learning and social spaces for the new students. Next steps will be to involve current students, especially those in Year 11, to make sure the plans dovetail with the student need.
SIXTH FORM UNIVERSITY CHALLENGE
Congratulations to Naomi Tooke, Megan Evans, Adam Stowe and Jack Berry who represented Boston Spa Academy Sixth Form fantastically at the University of Lincoln University Challenge National Sixth Form Quiz Competition, coming a brilliant 4th. We are very proud of them.
BIOLOGY FIELD TRIP
Our Year 13 Biology students went to Robin Hoods Bay for a field trip last Friday. Students were investigating zonation in a beach habitat, using quadrats to estimate seaweed coverage and periwinkle populations. They were also able to look at the effect of environmental factors on limpet populations. It was hard work on a cold and blustery day but the students were great, even finding time to discover a very large, grumpy crab!
SHOWCASING DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY
Miss Rawling, who leads Design and Technology, has initiated the Yellow Pencil Award, to be presented at the end of the year. Congratulations to Ava Williams and Edward Heffernan (both in in Year 8) who are our first nominees. More examples of student work can be found on the Design and Technology Instagram account.
NEWS FROM BANGLADESH
It is important that schools stay outwardly focussed, which means that things such as our partnership with schools in Narayanganj near Dhaka in Bangladesh are very important.
It was good this week to hear from Mr Kabir of the work being undertaken by the girls of Narayanganj Government Girls’ High School in Science, where they have been researching sound pollution by running a quiz, publishing a magazine and inviting guest speakers to school.
