THE GORSE WRITING COMPETITION

I am so proud of Lily Oakley O’Brien who won the Great Gorse Creative Writing Competition at Key Stages 4 and 5, and Harry Meaden who earned a ‘Special Commendation’ at Key Stage 3. Harry’s story was inspired by the novel ‘The Flip’ and tells the tale of a circus mannequin that takes the place of a young boy. Lily’s untitled, but nevertheless dark, work starts in the rain at a hospital and addresses the impact of a family bereavement. The standard of writing in this competition is really high, and both have done exceptionally well.

CELEBRATION ASSEMBLIES

We held our end of term celebration assemblies this week in which each recognised 100% attenders, the top attending tutor group, the ‘Top 10’ students for earning credits, a celebration of ‘Clean Slates’, and the ‘Tutor Group Star’. The full list of those recognised can be found here.

SIXTH FORM ‘QUIZMAS’

The staff retained their 100% win record, with a team made up of Mr McKernan and Mr McDermott. The highest achieving student team was ‘Don’t Do Anything Stupid’, featuring Deanna Smith, Megan Evans, Naomi Tooke, Bryony Lucas and Abbey Thomson. If you want to see if you can beat my own mediocre 13/20, here are the questions  and the answers.

CHRISTMAS JUMPERS

It was a delight to see so many of your people taking part in the Christmas jumper day. I am very proud of many of our students who still donated to our chosen charity without the wearing of the Christmas jumper.

SPORTS NEWS

The Year 9 boys’ and girls’ indoor athletics teams travelled to Morley Academy for the Gorse Games event on Wednesday.  Whilst we are still awaiting the full results, both teams competed exceptionally well in both track and field events, with stand- out performances on the track from Saskia Benjamin, Lucy Foster and Callum Parkinson, and we won the triple jump and vertical jump by a huge margin.
