PD HOUR

I enjoyed the opportunity to praise students this week, and was particularly impressed with planners I saw while in some English and Geography lessons.   I was also particularly pleased to praise the following in PD Hour: Daniel Bold, Nora Stark, Isabella Hanson, Grace Taylor, Ava Harper, Laila Reed, Felicity Lawford, George Duncan, Macauley Mullaney, Hannah Liesener, Georgie Smith, Phoebe Goodwin, Harri Johnson, Sophie Skelton, Jessica Speight and Sophie Jackson,

SIXTH FORM

Tuesday January 15th was the deadline for all UCAS university applications in the UK. Our Year 13 students are looking to recreate the success of our past two cohorts where 96% took a place of their choice and half of all applicants achieved a place at a Russell Group university, on courses such as Engineering, Medicine, History, Maths and many more. These are exciting days, with a similar mix of applications including Medicine, Law, Politics, Biology and Computer Science to a wide range of universities such as Cambridge, Durham, Edinburgh, Warwick and UCL. We wish all our students the best of luck with their applications!

ALUMNI

Congratulations to Jack Jenkins who has signed his first professional contract with Leeds United this week. Jack is regular in the U18s, helping them to the top of the PD League North, and was part of the team that won that same competition last year. It must be an exciting time to be part of LUFC. This contract is well deserved and reflects Jack’s personal qualities as well as his physical prowess. We wish him every success.

MUSIC

Congratulations to Daniel Hemsley (Year 8) who passed his electric guitar Grade 1 exam with merit, to Ava Williams who passed her piano Grade 4 and Alex Williams who passed Grade 7 Piano with merit. I am envious of their musical talent, but also admire their personal qualities, including their resilience, commitment and discipline.

ART

I have very much enjoyed looking at the work of Year 9 in Art. They are studying a variety of approaches to printing and pictured here are examples of reduction lino prints. These examples are self-portraits by Sarah Mohamadi, Zhou Lowton, Erin Smith and Billie Hedley.

SPORTS NEWS

On Tuesday evening the U12 5-a-side team travelled to Cardinal Heenan to compete in a Leeds Schools indoor tournament.

The girls’ first two games saw them face Pudsey Crawshaw and Temple Moor. Against Crawshaw we had a strong team performance with goals coming from Connie Edwards and Megan Sykes, with a final score of 2-1. From here the girls built in confidence and beat Temple Moor 6-0 in their second game, with goals from Megan Sykes, Izzy Srinivasa and Grace Sykes.

In the semi-finals the girls were pitched against Ralph Thoresby and fought well in a close game. They worked hard to defend and attack as a team covering a lot of ground.  The final score was 3-2 with goals from Connie, Megan and Grace.

In the final the girls played a strong Carr Manor side. The girls were up for the challenge and again approached the game with composure and confidence. After a close game at full time the score was 3-3 with goals coming from Megan and Izzy in 3 minutes of extra time. The game was tense and great work to defend ensured the opposition could not get through to make a shot on goal. In the last minute a final goal from Megan Sykes took the girls to a 4-3 victory.

The team will now go through to represent Leeds in the county tournament next Thursday.

The team then played in a 7-a-side cup match against Horsforth School on Thursday evening in bitterly cold temperatures. Again the girls’ attitude and commitment was fantastic and they were able to get themselves up to a 3-0 lead by half time. After a quick team talk and some substitutions, students started the second half as strongly as the first and kept the ball in the opponents half, scoring a further 3 goals. Final score 6-0, with goals from Grace Sykes, Quinesha Loney, Connie Edwards and Izzy Srinivasa.
