Physical Education Department

The PE team consists of 6 specialist teachers, who deliver a rich and varied programme across all the key stages. Committed to raising standards of teaching in the classroom and examinations results, the PE team works hard to meet the ever changing needs of our young people.

The team also enjoys close links with other colleges and educational establishments especially Leeds Trinity University whose  students are trained by our mentors. The team also has a School Sports Coordinator and a School Games Organiser who work closely with our local primary schools, raising standards and promoting participation.

We have superb indoor and outdoor sporting facilities. Indoor facilities consist of multi-purpose sports hall, 3 gymnasiums, 2 fitness suites, dance studio, climbing wall and a twinned court tennis centre. Outdoor facilities consist of extensive football and rugby fields, bouldering wall, floodlit astroturf and netball/tennis courts. These are fully equipped and well used both in and out of school time.

Classes are taught in either single or mixed sex groups to best suit the activity of the pupils.  They are mixed in examination groups in KS4 and KS5. Students and staff are committed to student enrichment and there is an extensive extracurricular programme which runs from Year 7 to Year 13.

Students work on a 3 year programme of study following the National Curriculum covering activity areas of outwitting opponents, accurate replication, exploring & communicating ideas, performing at maximum levels, identifying and solving problems, exercising safely and efficiency to improve health.

Alongside this we aim to develop personal skills such as team work, communication, leadership, fair play and resilience.

Pupils can opt to complete the BTEC Level 2 course in Sport which will entail a mix of practical and theory lessons.  Units include; Fitness for Sport and Exercise, Practical Sport Performance, Sport Performance in Action, and Leading Sports Activities.

Alongside core PE in which pupils follow an options programme designed to promote the benefits of a healthy style and instil a lifelong desire for physical activity.

We deliver GCSE PE (AQA syllabus).  This involves 2 theory lessons per week focussing  on the body in sport and sociocultural? factors affecting participation.  There is also an additional practical lesson per week where pupils will improve and refine skills in line with the exam criteria.

We offer A Level PE and BTEC Extended Certificate or Diploma in Sport.

Our A Level PE course is endorsed by AQA.  Students receive 5 hours per week in lessons studying one of the following topic areas; Applied Anatomy and Physiology, Skill Acquisition, Sport and Society, Exercise Physiology, Biomechanical Movement, Sport Psychology, The Role of Technology in Physical Activity and Sport.  There is also an additional practical unit where students demonstrate their competitive skills in their chosen activity and analyse their weaknesses with their ability explaining how these weaknesses are caused and improved.

Our BTEC Level 3 Sport course is endorsed by Edexcel.  Students have 4 hours per week in lessons and 2 hours dedicated independent study.  The units include; Anatomy and Physiology, Fitness Training and Programing for Health Sport and Wellbeing, professional Development in Sports Industries and Sports Leadership as well as a further 1 or 3 options depending on the route chosen (Extended Certificate or Diploma).

In partnership with Leeds United Foundation, we also run a Football Development Centre for male and female students aged 16-19 that want to develop their skills in either playing, whilst representing the school and club in the Foundation College’s league, or from a coaching angle. Players are offered the opportunity to undertake additional FA coaching qualifications and other leadership awards, and partake in regular training sessions with fully qualified UEFA standard coaches. This runs alongside their academic programme.

The course is based at Elland Road Stadium and Boston Spa School.
