Modern Foreign Languages Department

In the Modern Foreign Languages team, we are six professionals who take pride in the job we do. We believe strongly in the importance of learning languages and that they hold a fundamental place at the heart of the curriculum. This belief underpins our work as teachers and we are fully committed to raising the standards of teaching in the classroom and examination results.

Our students are able to have contact with a native speaker of the language(s) they study due to the school policy of employing foreign language assistants in French, Spanish.

All students entering the school study French for 3 hours a week in Year 7 and this continues with 2 hours in Year 8 and during Year 9 this increases to 3 hours per week.  The top set in both bands also study an hour per week of fast track Spanish.

All students can opt for French, Spanish or both at GCSE. Students follow the AQA linear specification, studying their chosen language(s) for 3 hours a week in both Year 10 and Year 11.  On top of this students will have the opportunity to work with a Foreign Language Assistant to help develop their oral and aural skills.

Students then have the opportunity to take their language learning further by opting to study their chosen language(s) at Advanced Level.

Year 12 and Year 13: A Level Linear course (AQA) in French or Spanish – 5 hours per week plus additional time with the Foreign Language Assistant.

Our programme of enrichment is extensive.

We currently run a Paris residential trip open to Year 9 and above.

We currently offer a residential to Málaga (Andalucía) open to KS4 and KS5 students.
